Thanks mate, it does indeed run pretty well, especially considering how much DOM manipulation it is doing. I'll probably do something similar for the star and tree now I have the general infrastructure done.

The PCA9685 looks pretty interesting. Cheap and pretty easy to use. I might order some for fiddling with... Still got those RGB LEDs I haven't done anything with yet, but I have a rail of tiny13s and a bag of ping-pong balls waiting to get married up with them.

I think you should look at the PCA9685. "The PCA9685 is an I2C-bus controlled 16-channel LED controller".
